About us

Browsing through Yellow Pages Silvana noticed an advert for Animal Samaritans, she gave them a call and the seed of an idea was sown.

Following a conversation with the late Harry Moore, unwanted cats began to arrive at the house for her to look after until homes were found! They came singly at first but then the numbers increased as Silvana's natural empathy with her feline friends together with her flair for being able to inspire trust in the fearful was recognised.

Unfortunately, she found it difficult to part with 'her foster cats' so the numbers in the house and on the grounds flourished! Eventually space became a major issue and a second cat house was erected in memory of Harry.

Inevitably, the story of Silvana's success with 'problem' cats spread and she was approached by Cats Protection and Battersea to see if she would help with the ones that no-one else would take. Although the provision of several of the current cat houses has been funded by other rescue organisations, all other expenses are borne by Romney House - food, electricity, bedding etc create huge & ongoing bills!

Those type of rescue cats take much longer to rehome, indeed many of them may never be domestic pets and will live the rest of their lives with and around Silvana. At any one time there are 80+ cats roaming the grounds of Romney House, the vast majority of which would no longer be alive if she had not agreed to take them in.

Sadly, there are so many more that need her help, particularly the old and the sick, the frightened and the aggressive (so often one causes the other!) but she is bursting at the seams!

Good natured family pets & even kittens, find themselves homeless and awaiting new families alongside the longer term, more troubled cases.

By working with other organisations & with our supporters help, Romney House can be a sanctuary & 2nd chance for all of these animals - but we need every cat lover to help however they can.

You can improve a cats life!

  • More cat houses need to be erected and furnished
  • Funds must be available to cover routine expenses and veterinary costs
  • Practical assistance with the endless cleaning, feeding, interaction and socialisation that these poor animals need.
  • Silvana is often out in the pens until gone midnight - persuading some poor soul to eat
  • Make toys or knit blankets for the cats Bedding and toys are always needed, and if ever there were an abundance they could be sold to raise much needed funds
  • Volunteer: help with feeding, cleaning & socialising the cats
