2. The Problems & Solutions

In the absence of basic veterinary care, many cats will become chronically sick. Flea and worm infestations lower an animal's immune system making them very vulnerable to infections. Kittens with flu cannot suckle and can starve, blindness is a common complication in adults and kittens alike. The sight of skelatal animals with pus filled eyes, is not a pretty sight.

Many popular tourist areas are renowned for their 'crazy drivers', injuries sustained by stray animals can be horrific. Limbs can be literally hanging by a thread and if left untreated, will become infected and cause greater suffering.

The idea behind "SOS Sardinia" is quite simple - neuter the cats to limit and decrease the colony sizes, treat the sick and injured and organise regular feeding programmes using local people who care enough to help. This is in everyone's interest but it costs money.

Dealing positively with feral colonies helps with the conservation of native wildlife, hunger led predation, disease and indiscriminate poisoning can all be avoided. See why cats reproduce at such a surprising rate.
