DIY SOS Sardinia Blog - Day 4
Disaster! When I arrive I find the new roof significantly bowed in with pools of water in it from the rain. Major stress…. In retrospect it seems that this plastic is not as rigid as ours here. Also here we lay it in narrow strips which overlap and form a natural strong point. I manage to shift the water without doing too much damage to the roof. I try to get a grip on what to do. Clearly I need more support, but that’s my second problem. I don’t have any materials. Do I take the new roof down or soldier on. I start by scavenging whatever I can find from the villa in terms of wood. I also borrow (!) some wood from Giovanni (without telling him) which I hope he doesn't want and which I have no way of explaining to him what for either as he speaks no English and I speak no Italian. Over the day I manage to run 3 wooden supports from top to bottom, 2 metal rods from top to bottom, and a hodge-podge of bits of wood crossways all secured with screws. This time I do a proper test using buckets of water. I have to fine tune the height at the centre again, but it looks like the only problem is now at a point in the centre where there is a post I'm not allowed to cut down to size. Still it seems ok. I also tidy up the internal wire roof giving a bit more height. I notice that another problem is that there may be back spill down the side of the shed due to the reduced slope. I think this can be fixed by laying the felt part way down the roof, but I’m out of time today. I tidy up in preparation for tomorrow, pack up all the tools and prepare the right hand side for my little ones. I’m basically exhausted by about 5:00 so I head home. I decide that I need to distress a bit so instead of showering I walk to the beach and go for a swim. OK that’s a slight stretch, its freezing! So I at least wade and swim back. I get back and play with the kittens, shower and get a takeaway pizza. I sit watching a Harry Potter movie which I realise in the morning I don’t remember much off. I also have a visitor at 00:30 to check on the kittens which trigger me to go to bed.
