Easter 2012 - The Hotel Cats
One of the things that surprised me is that these colonies are not always in towns. One good example of this is the colony at Porto Conte. There is a hotel right next door to the colony and the position is at a tourist spot, but off season the footfall is very low.
The colony is at the headland and doesn't really have much in the way of man-made shelter. The cats live amongst the dense scrub bushes that cover the whole area. You can see this spot via Google’s Streetview and surprisingly there are no cats in sight. If you drive by any day of the week there are always cats in attendance.
We stopped several times at the colony to feed them. As soon as the tins come out you are surrounded by cats. We also left dry food for them as well. Once they have eaten many flop out in the sun for a wash after their meal. One of the problems with this site and the church site is that kittens are left hidden by their mothers. The area is vast so finding any kittens is very difficult.
On a side note it’s also important to leave water. There is virtually no drinking water available other than that left by the helpers.
Many of the cats are wary of people, so you cannot touch them. A few are sociable in particular the 'boss' but all of them are tolerant of people being close to them, particularly if they have their head in a tin!
