Easter 2012 - People Who Help
None of this would be possible without the help of local volunteers. We met a few people on our short visit, but missed many of those who help at the colonies on a daily basis. Perhaps next time we can meet up with them and photograph the work they do each day to help these poor cats.
Specifically we should mention the following people who have been helping Silvana long term.
Martina (see picture) takes care of the villa cats and has also been a big part in vet care and rescue operations in the past. We visited her apartment where she was taking care of one of Silvana's cats and one stray (who refused to come out).
Dorothea can be found every day at the port feeding and taking care of the cats there. She is German but speaks fluent Italian; unfortunately we don’t speak either. She can be seen in the picture opposite wearing the black trousers.
Of course the local vet plays a big part in the whole operation. He was kind enough to let us photograph his examination of the cat with the infection. I will update this page once we know the outcome of her operation. A note on vets, as already mentioned they generally don't treat cats. But they also don’t have general facilities to keep any animals in overnight. Either the animal goes straight home (or in this case to a helpers house) or you can purchase cage and have it kept at the vets.
Finally of course Silvana, whose dedication to cats makes all this possible. Special thanks to her.
Update - The little cat which went to the vets with an infection is doing well. She spent some time being looked after at home before returning to her colony. A happy ending.
