2. The Problems & Solutions

In the absence of basic veterinary care, many cats will become chronically sick. Flea & worm infestations lower an animal's immune system making them very vulnerable to infections. Kittens with flu cannot suckle & can starve, blindness is a common complication in adults & kittens alike. The sight of skelatal animals with pus filled eyes, is not a pretty sight.

Many popular tourist areas are renowned for their 'crazy drivers', injuries sustained by stray animals can be horrific. Limbs can be literally hanging by a thread & if left untreated, will become infected & cause greater suffering.

The idea behind "SOS Sardinia" is quite simple - neuter the cats to limit & decrease the colony sizes, treat the sick & injured & organise regular feeding programmes using local people who care enough to help. This is in everyone's interest but it costs money.

Dealing positively with feral colonies helps with the conservation of native wildlife, hunger led predation, disease & indiscriminate poisoning can all be avoided. See why cats reproduce at such a surprising rate.
